There are several health conditions where massage therapy may not be advisable, or it may need to be modified to ensure safety. These are called contraindications for massage. Some conditions can make massage potentially harmful, and in such cases, the customer should consult with their healthcare provider before proceeding. Here are a few examples:
1. Infectious Diseases or Fever
Why: Massage can spread infections throughout the body or to the therapist.
Examples: Flu, cold, or any condition with a fever.
2. Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) or Blood Clots
Why: Massage could dislodge a blood clot, which could travel to the lungs, heart, or brain, potentially causing a life
threatening condition like a pulmonary embolism or stroke.
3. Severe Heart Conditions
Why: Conditions such as uncontrolled hypertension, congestive heart failure, or recent heart surgery can be
aggravated by increased circulation caused by massage.
Examples: Heart attack history, congestive heart failure, or angina.
4. Recent Surgery or Severe Injuries
Why: Areas that have undergone surgery or suffered from recent injuries need time to heal, and massaging them could
cause further damage.
Examples: Post-operative recovery, broken bones, severe sprains, or open wounds.
5. Cancer
Why: While some cancer patients may benefit from gentle massages, it’s essential to get clearance from an
oncologist, as there is a concern that massage could potentially spread cancer cells via the lymphatic system.
Note: Oncology massage is a specialized form and is sometimes recommended with approval.
6. Skin Conditions or Infections
Why: Any contagious skin conditions can spread through direct contact.
Examples: Rashes, athlete's foot, contagious dermatitis, or severe eczema.
7. Osteoporosis (Severe)
Why: People with fragile bones may be at risk of fractures or injuries if a massage is too vigorous.
Caution: Only gentle techniques should be used if the person has mild osteoporosis, with clearance from their
healthcare provider.
8. Pregnancy (First Trimester)
Why: Although massage can be very beneficial later in pregnancy, during the first trimester there may be a slightly
increased risk of miscarriage. Prenatal massages should be done by a trained therapist who specializes in pregnancy.
9. Uncontrolled Diabetes
Why: Diabetic clients may have impaired nerve sensations and circulation, leading to difficulty regulating temperature
or feeling pain during deep tissue massage, especially in the legs and feet.
10. Varicose Veins
Why: Direct pressure on varicose veins can damage blood vessels or worsen the condition.
11. High or Low Blood Pressure (Uncontrolled)
Why: Massage may either raise or lower blood pressure, and those with unmanaged hypertension or hypotension could
be at risk.
12. Infectious or Inflammatory Conditions
Why: Conditions such as cellulitis or any other form of systemic inflammation or infection should not be massaged,
as it could exacerbate the problem.
13. Contagious Gastrointestinal Issues
Why: Conditions like stomach flu or food poisoning are highly contagious, and massage could worsen symptoms or
spread the illness to others.
14. Kidney or Liver Disease (Advanced)
Why: Massage increases circulation and may overburden organs that are already compromised, especially if they are
responsible for filtering toxins from the body.
15. Acute Inflammation or Swelling
Why: Massaging inflamed areas can worsen the condition.
Examples: Acute injuries, rheumatoid arthritis flare-ups, or inflamed joints.
16. Neurological Conditions
Why: Conditions like epilepsy, multiple sclerosis (during flare-ups), or nerve damage might require specialized care.
Massage could trigger symptoms or exacerbate neurological issues.
Any customer with a medical condition or those unsure about their health status must consult with their healthcare provider before undergoing massage therapy. In certain cases, massage can be adapted, but only under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
